  This stretch of Ontonagon River is 23.1 miles long and is a class I-II section of whitewater according to American Whitewater. The average Michigan whitewater rafting or kayaking river tends to be a bit easier to master than those in other states, so if you're visiting here do keep in mind that a lot of the rivers in this state are suitable for beginners. The starting point is not too far from Houghton, please print out a copy of the road
    map further down the page so you won’t get lost. This section has enough mileage for an overnight trip, so why not pack your camp stove too. A good workout and just being out on the river for a while are great reasons to
come. The river winds through the Gogebic Range and you get great scenery. Whether you're whitewater rafting or kayaking in this general area you'll find lots of paddling rivers. The Highway 45 to Ontonagon stretch is one of many paddling stretches in this river system. There are campgrounds quite near the river where you can camp. The scenic beauty of Ontonagon County and the cool fresh water attract people from near and far. Not too many  
hotels nearby, you'll have to drive a bit to get to one, and if you make reservations in advance you're all set.

Briefly about the general area:
Ontonagon River is not far at all from Rockland. Go for a hike on the North Country National Scenic Trail. Ontonagon River gets a typical amount of rainfall. Most of the rain falls during August while February is the month with the least amount of precipitation. Summertime highs at Ontonagon River commonly tend to be in the 70's. When the night sets in temperatures sink down into the 50's. All through the wintertime the highs are typically in the 10's while Ontonagon River night low temperatures during the winter are in the-10's.
