  If you're coming from Merrill it's not a long drive at all to the starting location, if you're not familiar with the area there's a road map further down the page. The nature scenery of Ontonagon County and the sparkling of the sunlight on the water have people coming here. Getting some good exercise and a chance to spend some time outdoors will make you glad you came. There aren’t any hotels right nearby but if you're willing to drive a
    short distance then no problem but do book a room before you come because it is a very popular destination. If you've been whitewater rafting and kayaking outside Michigan you might find the rivers here a bit more manageable,
so if you're not from around here don't forget that many runs in this state are very easy. This stretch has has enough mileage, it's perfect for a one day trip. The Gogebic Range scenery is wonderful. If you're a camper you can camp at one of the great campgrounds nearby. You might be into whitewater rafting or kayaking or both, doesn't matter, this area has a large number of paddling rivers. There are plenty of other stretches in this  
river system that can be paddled as well. The Thayer Road to FS Road 178 section of Ontonagon River in Michigan is 9.7 miles long and it is classified as a class I-II(IV) section by American Whitewater.

Briefly about the general area:
Ontonagon River is a location with many visitors from Ewen, and Ottawa National Forest is a good place to go. There's no way anybody can get bored here in the Gogebic Range. Good hiking is available along the Alligator Eye Trail, and Lake Gogebic State Park is worth visiting. This is a great river. Ontonagon River gets a common amount of annual precipitation.
