Michigan whitewater, Paint River Iron county, Hemlock River to Bates Amasa Road section whitewater kayaking, rafting, and paddling information.   CLASS I-III     5.6 miles   The wonderful Michigan scenery and the cool fresh water make the trip here worthwhile. This stretch of Paint River is 5.6 miles long and is rated by American Whitewater as a class I-III section. If you've been out of state whitewater rafting and kayaking you might find the rivers here more forgiving, so if you're visiting here do keep in mind that many runs in this state are very easy. This is a pretty decent length section, it's good length     for a morning trip. A good workout and just being out on the river for a while have a lot of people coming here. The put-in location is a short drive from Iron Mountain, please print out a copy of the road map further down the page so you won’t get lost. The campgrounds here at Paint River are pretty good. There are a few other sections in this river system that can be paddled as well. Not too many hotels nearby, you'll have to drive a bit to get to one, but you'd better reserve in advance because these hotels fill up quick. Whether you're whitewater rafting or kayaking around here you'll find a large number of good spots. Briefly about the general   area: Lower Hemlock Rapids is an inspiring location to pop by while here, and at Paint River you always meet someone from Amasa. A short visit to Hemlock Rapids is always worthwhile, and Bewabic State Park is a great spot to stretch your legs a bit. This river is so great. Near Paint River you come across the Lauterman Trail which is a good hiking trail. High temperatures at Paint River during the summer are in the 70's. Once the sun is down it drops down to the 50's. Through the winter highs are in the 20's with winter lows in the 0's overnight here at Paint River. From a rainfall point of view Paint River is a relatively typical spot.
