I have loved the Peshekee for over 63 years, watching rocks appear and disappear with the seasons. It's a special day when kayakers also appear, usually in early spring. I'm afraid the time for good kayaking is over for this year. Sorry! By the way, there are plenty of good motels in Marquette. Says Kay
The starting location is a short drive from Houghton, there's a road map further down the page with more info on that. The nature |
scenery of Michigan and the water flowing gracefully down Peshekee River attract people from near and far. Since you're on this site you are probably into whitewater rafting or kayaking, either way in this general area you'll
| find lots of paddling rivers. This section of Peshekee River in Baraga/Marquette County is 17.9 miles long and it is classified as a class I-III section by American Whitewater. If you have the time you can make this a two day trip, so pack your camp stove. Getting a good workout and spending some quality time in nature will make you glad you came. There are campgrounds quite near the river where you can camp. The average Michigan whitewater | |

rafting or kayaking river tends to be a bit easier to master than those in other states, so don't forget that a large number of rivers in this state are quite easy. You might have to settle for a hotel a bit away from the
river if you want to stay the night, but you'd better reserve in advance because these hotels fill up quick. There are some good sections to paddle in this river system, the Peshekee Grade to Highway 41 section is one of
them.
Briefly about the general area: While you're here at Peshekee River you will meet lots of people from close by Michigamme. A trip to Craig Lake State Park revives the soul, and Van Riper State Park is a magnificent place to go.
