Michigan whitewater, Powder Mill Creek

Gogebic county, above Powderhorn Falls to Cty. 513 section whitewater kayaking, rafting, and paddling information.

CLASS II-IV+     2 miles
The scenic beauty of Gogebic County and the beautiful way the water current moves down the stream make the trip here worthwhile. The put-in location is a short drive from Merrill, there's a road map further down the page with more info on that. Whitewater paddling here in the Gogebic Range is a great experience. You might be into whitewater rafting or kayaking or both, doesn't matter, there are lots of good rivers for that around here.
And of course, there are campgrounds nearby. The above Powderhorn Falls to Cty. 513 stretch of Powder Mill Creek is 2 miles long and is rated by American Whitewater as a class II-IV+ section. This is a pretty short section
so better bring some good walking shoes. The rivers for whitewater rafting and kayaking in this state are often easier than in other states, so if you're not from around here don't forget that rivers in this state are not as hard as elsewhere. A good workout and a chance to spend some time outdoors have a lot of people coming here. You might have to settle for a hotel a bit away from the river if you want to stay the night, but if you don’t
have reservations you might end up sleeping in your car. This is one of a small number of paddling stretches in this river system, there are a few others too.

Briefly about the general area:
The best way to spend a winter day is on the slopes of close by Big Powderhorn Mountain. Hiking is a popular thing to do around Powder Mill Creek; Rainbow Falls Trail is a tremendous local trail. If you're dropping by Powder Mill Creek from Bessemer, you won't be the only one, and do put some time aside to spend at Powder Horn Falls while you're here at Powder Mill Creek. This river has so much to offer.
