Michigan whitewater, Sandstone Creek

Ontonagon county, Roadside along Highway 45 section whitewater kayaking, rafting, and paddling information.

CLASS IV     1 miles
The scenic beauty of Ontonagon County and the water flowing gracefully down Sandstone Creek have people coming here. The average Michigan whitewater rafting or kayaking river tends to be a bit easier to master than those in other states, so if you're visiting here do keep in mind that the rivers in this state are less demanding. The Roadside along Highway 45 stretch of Sandstone Creek in Ontonagon County is 1 miles long and is rated by American
Whitewater as a class IV section. This stretch is very short so it's not like you're gonna spend hours on the river in one stretch. Some people prefer whitewater rafting and some kayaking, either way there are lots of good
spots for that around here. A bit of exercise and a chance to spend some time outdoors will make you glad you came. The starting location is a short drive from Houghton, as you can see on the road map further down. There are campgrounds quite near the river where you can camp. The Gogebic Range scenery is wonderful. There aren’t any hotels right nearby but if you're willing to drive a short distance then no problem and if you make reservations
in advance you're all set. There are some good sections to paddle in this river system, the Roadside along Highway 45 section is one of them.

Briefly about the general area:
While you're here at Sandstone Creek you can take a hike along the North Country National Scenic Trail, and there are plenty of folks from Rockland here at Sandstone Creek. Life's too short to enjoy all the enjoyable stuff in the Gogebic Range. If you want to have a look at some out of the ordinary stuff, have a look at South Bluff. Sandstone Creek gets a typical amount of rainfall. August is the wettest month with most rain, and the driest month is February.
