  The Plains Road to Sturgeon Gorge Road section of Sturgeon River is 6.8 miles long and is rated by American Whitewater as a class I-IV section. The nature scenery of Michigan and the sparkling of the sunlight on the water have people coming here. Whitewater rafting and kayaking spots in Michigan are easier than the national norm, so don't forget that rivers in this state are not as hard as elsewhere. There aren’t any hotels right nearby but
    if you're willing to drive a short distance then no problem and if you make reservations in advance you're all set. The Plains Road to Sturgeon Gorge Road section is one of many paddling sections in this river system. If
you're coming from Houghton it's not a long drive at all to the put-in location, if you're not familiar with the area there's a road map further down the page. No matter if you're whitewater rafting or kayaking in this general area you'll find lots of paddling places. This stretch is mid length, good for a one day paddling trip. There's camping available near Sturgeon River. A bit of exercise and just being out on the river for a while are great  
reasons to come.

Briefly about the general area:
Tibbets Falls is a good local attraction, and Baraga State Park is a good spot to go. Here at Sturgeon River there are plenty of people from Watton, and the Pelkie Creek Hunter Walking Trails is a perfect hiking trail nearby. This is a really good river. Sturgeon River is a good spot of normal rainfall. August is when you get the most rain here; the driest month of the year is February. Through the warm months here at Sturgeon River, high temperatures commonly reach the 80's with nighttime lows in the 50's. Daytime highs through the winter are in the 20's while the cold winter nights at Sturgeon River are in the 0's.
