Michigan whitewater, Sturgeon River Cheboygan county, Trowbridge Road to Indian River section whitewater kayaking, rafting, and paddling information.   CLASS I-II     16 miles   While it may be easier than the Gully or other truly white rivers, the Sturgeon River is technical river and has an 80% tip over rate in a flat bottom kayak. Large canoes and kayaks over 13 feet also have a high trip over rate unless you are familiar with the river due to the log jams, narrow sections, sharp turns, switch backs and overgrown brush. This wilderness river will yank you right off you kayak if you even think about grabbing a     tree branch to push it out of the way. While it may be a good place to get familiar with white water paddling before moving up to class III and Class IV rivers it is by no means ''often easier than elsewhere, so better not forget that quite a few of the sections in this state are pretty easy.” That might apply to other rivers, not the Sturgeon. It is true that the section from Trowbridge to Wolverine is easier. It is not a graceful paddle. Says Sheree Lincoln This section of Sturgeon River is 16 miles long and is a class I-II section of whitewater according to American Whitewater. The natural beauty of Cheboygan County and the water flowing gracefully   down Sturgeon River are in themselves reasons enough to come here to paddle. Whitewater rafting and kayaking in Michigan is often easier than elsewhere, so better not forget that quite a few of the sections in this state are pretty easy. The Trowbridge Road to Indian River section is one of a few paddling sections in this river system. Some people prefer whitewater rafting and some kayaking, either way there are not so many other good rivers for that around here. Great exercise and a chance to spend some time outdoors are sure to keep you coming back for more. The starting location is a reasonable drive from Sault Ste.
