  The FS491 to CR24 stretch of Vermilion River in Minnesota is 4 miles long and is according to American Whitewater a class II-IV section of whitewater. The put-in location is a short drive from Duluth, please print out a copy of the road map further down the page so you won’t get lost. There are plenty of other sections in this river system that can be paddled as well. Not too many hotels nearby, you'll have to drive a bit to get to one,
    but you'd better reserve in advance because these hotels fill up quick. Since you're on this site you are probably into whitewater rafting or kayaking, either way in this general area you won't find many other paddling spots.
Whitewater rafting and kayaking spots in Minnesota tend to be more challenging than the national average, so keep in mind that the rivers in this state are less manageable. The beautiful scenery of St. Louis County and the playfulness of the water are reasons enough to come here and paddle. This is a pretty decent length section, good for a one day paddling trip. There's camping available near Vermilion River.

Briefly about the general
Vermilion Gorge is a magnificent place to spend some time at, and the great people of Crane Lake like to hang out close by. For the period of the months of summer highs here at Vermilion River get into the 70's. For the period of the moonlight hours it's mostly in the 40's. For the duration of the wintertime this place gets highs in the 10's, and overnight lows at Vermilion River all through the wintertime regularly dip into the-20's. The annual rainfall here at Vermilion River is about average. All through the month of June you get the most rain around here, and the driest month is February.
