Montana whitewater, Tenderfoot Creek

Meagher county, South Fork Tenderfoot to Smith River section whitewater kayaking, rafting, and paddling information.

CLASS II     11 miles

I'm a land owner on the Tenderfoot and I wouldn't recomend trying to float it. It is a fun place to go tubing and have short floats but it isn't a good place for an extended trip. There are numerous log jams and gravel bars to navigate. On the other hand The Smith River is awesome. Says Lee Zehntner

The nature scenery of Meagher County and the sparkling of the sunlight on the water beats anything. If you've been whitewater rafting and
kayaking outside Montana you might find the rivers here a bit more manageable, so you'd better keep in mind that many of the sections in this state are safe for beginners. Getting a good workout and spending some quality
time in nature have people coming from far and near. The starting point is not too far from Great Falls, please print out a copy of the road map further down the page so you won’t get lost. No matter if you're whitewater rafting or kayaking in this general area you won't find many other paddling places. If you're a camper you can camp at one of the great campgrounds nearby. Not too many hotels nearby, you'll have to drive a bit to get to
one, and if you make reservations in advance you're all set. This stretch has enough mileage for an overnight trip, so pack your camping stuff. The South Fork Tenderfoot to Smith River stretch is one of a few paddling stretches in this river system.

Briefly about the general area:
Lewis and Clark National Forest is a delightful place to pop by on a wonderful day. On a great day at Tenderfoot Creek you can take a hike along the Deep Creek Figure 8 Loop National Recreation Trail, and Double Gulch is also a splendid site to discover. Coming to this river is always a good idea.
