New Hampshire whitewater, Mad River

Grafton county, Gorge section whitewater kayaking, rafting, and paddling information.

CLASS III     1 miles
The Gorge section of Mad River is 1 miles long and has been rated as a class III section by American Whitewater. The beautiful scenery of New Hampshire and the sparkling of the sunlight on the water attract people from near and far. If you're coming from Laconia it's not a long drive at all to the starting location, as you can see on the road map further down. The beautiful White Mountains scenery is an added bonus. Getting a good workout
and just hanging out with mother nature will make you glad you came. This stretch is very short so it's not like you're gonna spend hours on the river in one stretch. There are nice comfortable hotels here, but do book a
room before you come because it is a very popular destination. There are a few other sections in this river system that can be paddled as well. The campgrounds here at Mad River are pretty good. Some people prefer whitewater rafting and some kayaking, either way there are lots of good places for that around here. The average whitewater rafting or kayaking river tends to be a bit harder to master in this state than those in other states, so don't
forget that a lot of the rivers here are not suitable for beginners.

Briefly about the general area:
The Dickey Mountain Trail offers hiking at its best; while you're here you will meet lots of folks from close by Campton. All the outdoors entertaining stuff in the White Mountains will keep you coming back time and again. Wellington State Beach is worth stopping at if you're at Mad River, and Mad River is right by the Welch Mountain Trail. At this river you will never have a bad time. Waterville Valley is a very popular ski area in the vicinity, and you ought to certainly stop at scenic Center Harbor Town Beach since you're here.
