The scenic beauty of New Hampshire and the cool fresh water attract people from near and far. This is one of a small number of paddling sections in this river system, there are a few others too. Whitewater rafting and kayaking in New Hampshire is often tougher than elsewhere, so better not forget that many of     the rivers here are not very forgiving. The beautiful White Mountains scenery is an added bonus. The Thornton section of Smarts Brook in New Hampshire is 1.5 miles long and is according to American Whitewater a class V section of whitewater. There are campgrounds quite near the river where you can camp. No matter if you're whitewater rafting or kayaking this area has a large number of paddling spots. A good workout and just hanging out with mother nature are great reasons to come. This is a bit of a short stretch so better bring some good walking shoes. There are many good hotels to choose from, but you'd better reserve in advance because these hotels fill up quick. Briefly   about the general area: Smarts Brook is not far at all from Waterville Valley, and Center Harbor Town Beach is pretty close by if you're in a beach type of mood. So much cool stuff to do here in the White Mountains, too good to be true. You can never get enough of the great skiing at Waterville Valley; there's delightful hiking along the Welch Mountain Trail. This is a really good river. Good hiking is available along the Smarts Brook Trail. Smarts Brook gets a normal amount of precipitation. The month of August is the wettest with most of the rain, and the driest month of the year is February.
