New Hampshire whitewater, Smith River

Merrimack Grafton county, Route 104 to Bristol section whitewater kayaking, rafting, and paddling information.

CLASS IV     1.75 miles
The put-in location is a reasonable drive from Concord, as you can see on the road map further down. The wonderful Merrimack / Grafton County scenery and the sparkling of the sunlight on the water have people coming here. The beauty of the White Mountains is a great plus for this river. If you're a camper you can camp at one of the great campgrounds nearby. The average New Hampshire whitewater rafting or kayaking river tends to be harder
to run than those in other states, so if you're visiting here do keep in mind that many of the sections here are not safe for beginners. You might be into whitewater rafting or kayaking or both, doesn't matter, around here
you'll find a large number of good spots. This river system has a few good paddling sections and the Route 104 to Bristol section is one of them. Getting some good exercise and a chance to spend some time outdoors will make you glad you came. This stretch is short so it's not like you're gonna spend hours on the river in one stretch. The Route 104 to Bristol section of Smith River is 1.75 miles long and is rated by American Whitewater as a
class IV section. You might have to settle for a hotel a bit away from the river if you want to stay the night, and if you make reservations in advance you're all set.

Briefly about the general area:
Really pleasant skiing awaits you at Ragged Mountain; hiking is a popular thing to do around Smith River; Melton Falls Trail is a good local trail. All year is a good time in the White Mountains if you go for the outdoors. Hit the beach if you want, Wadleigh State Beach is practically right here. Why not take a refreshing hike along the Manning Trail, and Wellington State Beach is a beautiful site any time of year.
