New Mexico whitewater, Jemez River

Sandoval county, Battleship Rock to Zia Pueblo section whitewater kayaking, rafting, and paddling information.

The wonderful Sandoval County scenery and the cool fresh water beats anything. The rivers for whitewater rafting and kayaking in this state are often easier than in other states, so don't forget that the rivers in this state are less demanding. A good workout and a chance to spend some time outdoors will have you coming back for more. This river system has a few good paddling stretches and the Battleship Rock to Zia Pueblo section is one
of them. The river winds through the San Juan and Jemez Mountains and you get great scenery. There aren’t any hotels right nearby but if you're willing to drive a short distance then no problem but do book a room before
you come because it is a very popular destination. You can pitch a tent or park your RV at a nearby campground. No matter if you're whitewater rafting or kayaking this is an area with not too many other spots for that. If you're coming from Los Alamos it's not a long drive at all to the starting location, there's a road map further down the page with more info on that. A stretch of this length does require some preparations, so better bring
your camping gear along.

Briefly about the general area:
Fenton Lake State Park is a fine location to go if you're at Jemez River, and Jemez River is a location with many visitors from Ponderosa. But wait, there's more enjoyable things to do in the San Juan and Jemez Mountains. A visit to San Juan Canyon is always fun, and don't leave Jemez River without first going for a hike along the Padre Alonzo Trail. If you come to this river you will have a good time for sure. If you're addicted to cool geologic highlights, try Mesa de los Palomares, and there's delightful hiking along the Bland Bear Springs Trail.
