CLASS I-III     9 miles
  This section of Rio de los Brazos in Rio Arriba County is 9 miles long and has been rated as a class I-III section by American Whitewater. The wonderful New Mexico scenery and the cool fresh water attract people from near and far. The starting location is a short drive from Espanola, if you're not familiar with the area there's a road map further down the page. Not too many hotels nearby, you'll have to drive a bit to get to one, and if you
    make reservations in advance you're all set. If you've been whitewater rafting and kayaking outside this state you might find the rivers here a bit more forgiving, so if you're visiting here do keep in mind that many of
the sections in this state are safe for beginners. On this section you do get some distance, it's good length for a morning trip. Since you're on this site you are probably into whitewater rafting or kayaking, either way this area has a large number of paddling rivers. Great exercise and a chance to spend some time outdoors are sure to keep you coming back for more. There are so many stretches to paddle in this river system, the Corkins  
Lodge to confluence with Rio Chama stretch is just one of many. You can pitch a tent or park your RV at a nearby campground. The wild scenery of the San Juan and Jemez Mountains is great.

Briefly about the general area:
While you're here at Rio de los Brazos you will meet lots of people from nearby Tierra Amarilla. Rio de los Brazos is in the vicinity of El Vado Lake State Park which is a striking place, and you unquestionably should check out Heron Lake State Park if you're here. This river is so wonderful. High temperatures at Rio de los Brazos through the long summer days are in the 80's.
