New Mexico whitewater, Rio Embudo Close to Rio Lucio to Highway 75 section whitewater kayaking, rafting, and paddling information.   CLASS IV-V(V+)     5 miles   The Close to Rio Lucio to Highway 75 stretch of Rio Embudo is 5 miles long and has been determined by American Whitewater to be a class IV-V(V+) section. Whitewater rafting and kayaking in New Mexico is often easier than elsewhere, so don't forget that rivers in this state are less demanding. The scenic beauty of New Mexico and the playfulness of the water make the trip here worthwhile. A good workout and just hanging out with mother nature     are great reasons to come. Not too many hotels nearby, you'll have to drive a bit to get to one, but you'd better reserve in advance because these hotels fill up quick. If you're coming from Taos it's not a long drive at all to the starting location, if you're not familiar with the area there's a road map further down the page. This is a pretty decent length section, suitable for an afternoon trip. The Close to Rio Lucio to Highway 75 stretch is one of a few paddling stretches in this river system. No matter if you're whitewater rafting or kayaking this is an area with plenty of places for that. If you're a camper you can camp at one of the great campgrounds   nearby. Briefly about the general area: Hiking is a popular thing to do around Rio Embudo; Medio Dia Trail is a wonderful local trail. A short journey to Souse Hole Rapid is always worthwhile, and why not take a refreshing hike along the Sierra Mosca Trail. This is such a great river. You'll meet a lot of folks from Dixon here. For the duration of the summertime here at Rio Embudo, high temperatures regularly get into the 80's. Once the sun is down it descends down to the 50's. High temperatures during the wintertime are normally in the 40's with winter lows in the 10's overnight here at Rio Embudo.
