New Mexico whitewater, Rio Santa Cruz

Santa Fe county, Cundiyo to Santa Cruz Reservoir section whitewater kayaking, rafting, and paddling information.

CLASS IV-V     1 miles
The beautiful scenery of Santa Fe County and the sparkling of the sunlight on the water have people coming here. If you've been whitewater rafting and kayaking outside this state you might find the rivers here a bit more forgiving, so if you're visiting here do keep in mind that rivers in this state are not as hard as elsewhere. Great exercise and just being out on the river for a while have a lot of people coming here. The Cundiyo to Santa
Cruz Reservoir stretch of Rio Santa Cruz in Santa Fe County is 1 miles long and has been determined by American Whitewater to be a class IV-V section. There's camping available near Rio Santa Cruz. Not too many hotels nearby,
you'll have to drive a bit to get to one, but do book a room before you come because it is a very popular destination. There are a few other sections in this river system that can be paddled as well. This is an extremely short section so you'll have to walk back to the start over and over. The put-in is not too far from Santa Fe, there's a road map further down the page with more info on that.

Briefly about the general area:
A

tremendous site close to Rio Santa Cruz is La Caja; there's great hiking along the Medio Dia Trail. A tour to Santa Fe National Historic Trail is worthwhile, and sites like Hyde Memorial State Park are fine to take a look at. At this river you will always have a good time. Don't leave Rio Santa Cruz without first going for a hike along the Sierra Mosca Trail. Gotta ski! Ski Santa Fe is a great spot to do that, and you'll meet a lot of people from Chimayo here. Santa Fe National Forest is a great place to stretch your legs a bit. It is very arid here at Rio Santa Cruz commonly. August is the month that gets the most rain; February is when it's the driest.
