CLASS II-III     40 miles
  This stretch of San Francisco River in Catron County is 40 miles long and is a class II-III section of whitewater according to American Whitewater. The wonderful New Mexico scenery and the cool fresh water beats anything. The average New Mexico whitewater rafting or kayaking river tends to be easier to run than those in other states, so you'd better keep in mind that quite a few of the sections in this state are pretty easy. A section like
    this is is of course not run in a single day, so make sure you pack enough food along with your camping gear. When you're paddling down a San Francisco Mountains river like this one you always get great scenery along the
way too. There are so many stretches to paddle in this river system, the San Francisco to Pleasanton stretch is just one of many. A bit of exercise and spending some quality time in nature will have you coming back for more. Not too many hotels nearby, you'll have to drive a bit to get to one, but do book a room before you come because it is a very popular destination. You might be into whitewater rafting or kayaking or both, doesn't matter,  
this is an area with not too many other places for that. The campgrounds here at San Francisco River are pretty good. The starting point is not too far from Silver City, as you can see on the road map further down.

Briefly about the general area:
The Hogan Cabin Trail offers hiking at its best, and you'll probably meet some people from Glenwood here. Man, is there a lot of enjoyable stuff to do in the San Francisco Mountains. San Francisco River is right by the Red Canyon Trail. Summertime highs at San Francisco River regularly tend to be in the 80's. For the duration of the dark hours of summer temperatures sink down into the 40's.
