New York whitewater, Black River

Herkimer county, Farr Road to Enos section whitewater kayaking, rafting, and paddling information.

CLASS I-V     8 miles
The rivers for whitewater rafting and kayaking in this state are often tougher than in other states, so if you're visiting here do keep in mind that a large number of rivers in this state are not easy. The Farr Road to Enos stretch of Black River is 8 miles long and is according to American Whitewater a class I-V section of whitewater. You might be into whitewater rafting or kayaking or both, doesn't matter, in this general area you'll
find lots of paddling rivers. This stretch has has enough mileage, suitable for an afternoon trip. The beautiful Adirondack Mountains scenery is an added bonus. You can pitch a tent or park your RV at a nearby campground.
This river system is full of great paddling sections, the Farr Road to Enos section is just one of them. The put-in location is a short drive from Utica-Rome, as you can see on the road map further down. The natural beauty of New York and the water flowing gracefully down Black River attract people from near and far. You might have to settle for a hotel a bit away from the river if you want to stay the night, but you'd better reserve in advance
because these hotels fill up quick. Great exercise and just hanging out with mother nature have people coming from far and near.

Briefly about the general area:
If you're popping by Black River from Forestport, you won't be the only one, and there's no such thing as a bad day of skiing at nearby McCauley Mountain. But wait, there's more cool stuff to do in the Adirondack Mountains. Hiking along the Forty Mountain Trail is good fun, and a short spree to Mulchy Spring is always worthwhile. This is such a fun river. Take a hike on the Stone Dam Trail. Black River is a wet place that gets much rain.
