New York whitewater, Chateaugay River Franklin county, Lower Chateugay Lake to Cooks Mill section whitewater kayaking, rafting, and paddling information.   CLASS II-V+     12.2 miles   This section of Chateaugay River in Franklin County is 12.2 miles long and has been determined by American Whitewater to be a class II-V+ section. The nature scenery of Franklin County and the playfulness of the water are in themselves reasons enough to come here to paddle. Whitewater rafting and kayaking in this state is often more difficult than elsewhere, so if you're visiting here do keep in mind that a large number of rivers in this     state are not easy. The starting location is a reasonable drive from Malone. A good workout and just being out on the river for a while will make you glad you came. For all you camping people there are campgrounds nearby. If you have the time you can make this a two day trip, so go ahead and pack your camp stove. Whether you're whitewater rafting or kayaking around here you'll find a large number of good spots. There aren’t any hotels right nearby but if you're willing to drive a short distance then no problem and if you make reservations in advance you're all set. There are a few other stretches in this river system that can be paddled as well.
