New York whitewater, Esopus Creek

Ulster county, Big Indian to Allaben section whitewater kayaking, rafting, and paddling information.

CLASS II(III)     5 miles
The Big Indian to Allaben stretch of Esopus Creek is 5 miles long and is according to American Whitewater a class II(III) section of whitewater. Whitewater rafting and kayaking in this state is often more difficult than elsewhere, so keep in mind that lots of rivers here are not for beginners. A bit of exercise and just being out on the river for a while will make you glad you came. Some people prefer whitewater rafting and some kayaking,
either way there are lots of good places for that around here. You can pitch a tent or park your RV at a nearby campground. This is a pretty decent length section, good for a one day paddling trip. Not too many hotels nearby,
you'll have to drive a bit to get to one, but if you don’t have reservations you might end up sleeping in your car. The beautiful scenery of New York and the water flowing gracefully down Esopus Creek have people coming here. There are plenty of other sections in this river system that can be paddled as well. The put-in is not too far from Hudson, please print out a copy of the road map further down the page so you won’t get lost.
