New York whitewater, Esopus Creek

Ulster county, Stillwater Road to Tongore Road section whitewater kayaking, rafting, and paddling information.

CLASS II-IV     7.5 miles
Whitewater rafting and kayaking in New York is often tougher than elsewhere, so better not forget that a lot of the rivers here are not suitable for beginners. The wonderful Ulster County scenery and the playfulness of the water make the trip here worthwhile. The starting point is not too far from Kingston, there's a road map further down the page with more info on that. Getting a good workout and just being out on the river for a while
have people coming from far and near. There are many good hotels to choose from, but you'd better reserve in advance because these hotels fill up quick. On this section you do get some distance, suitable for an afternoon
trip. If you're a camper you can camp at one of the great campgrounds nearby. The beautiful Catskill Mountains scenery is an added bonus. This stretch of Esopus Creek is 7.5 miles long and it is classified as a class II-IV section by American Whitewater. You might be into whitewater rafting or kayaking or both, doesn't matter, this area has a large number of paddling spots. This river system is full of great paddling sections, the Stillwater
Road to Tongore Road section is just one of them.

Briefly about the general area:
Put some time aside to spend at Glenerie Falls since you're here at Esopus Creek. Esopus Creek is not far at all from Lake Katrine; Margaret Lewis Norrie State Park is a splendid spot to stretch your legs a bit. Coming to this river is always a good idea. Esopus Creek gets a typical amount of annual rain. The month with most of the rain is May, and February is when it's the driest. For the duration of the warm days of summer at Esopus Creek temperatures are typically in the 70's while nighttime lows are ordinarily in the 50's.
