New York whitewater, Hoosic River

Rensselaer county, Schaghticoke Dam to Powerhouse section whitewater kayaking, rafting, and paddling information.

CLASS V     2 miles

There are many areas of the river that can be paddled. Most of them aren't whitewater however. Although there are some class 2 rapids upstream.  For more information on the river see the Appalachain Mountain Club Mohawk Hudson Chapter's website at http://www.amcmohawkhudson.org/outdoors/view.asp?loc=hsr Says Jeff Carden

The average whitewater rafting or kayaking river tends to be a bit harder to master in this state than those in
other states, so don't forget that many of the sections here are not safe for beginners. If you're coming from Albany-Schenectady-Troy it's not a long drive at all to the put-in location, as you can see on the road map further
down. The beautiful scenery of New York and the cool fresh water have people coming here. Whether you're whitewater rafting or kayaking this area has a large number of paddling spots. This section of Hoosic River in New York is 2 miles long and has been determined by American Whitewater to be a class V section. You can pitch a tent or park your RV at a nearby campground. This is a somewhat short section so no need to bring snacks. You might
have to settle for a hotel a bit away from the river if you want to stay the night, but if you don’t have reservations you might end up sleeping in your car. This is one of a small number of paddling stretches in this river system, there are a few others too. A bit of exercise and just being out on the river for a while will make you glad you came.

Briefly about the general area:
The slopes of Willard Mountain are so inviting nobody can resist, and you'll meet a lot of folks from Schaghticoke here. Peebles Island State Park is a magnificent place to stop by on a delightful day, and Grafton Lakes State Park is both good and charming.
