CLASS II-III+     6 miles
  The nature scenery of New York and the playfulness of the water beats anything. This section of Quacken Kill River in New York is 6 miles long and is a class II-III+ section of whitewater according to American Whitewater. There are campgrounds quite near the river where you can camp. The sections for whitewater rafting and kayaking here in New York are often more challenging than in other states, so better not forget that many of the rivers
    here are not very forgiving. A good workout and just being out on the river for a while will have you coming back for more. On this section you do get some distance, suitable for an afternoon trip. The put-in location is
a reasonable drive from Pittsfield. The Grafton to Cropseyville stretch is the only paddling stretch along Quacken Kill River. Whether you're whitewater rafting or kayaking around here you'll find a large number of good spots.

Briefly about the general area:
Cherry Plain State Park is worth taking a look at if you're at Quacken Kill River, and the slopes of Willard Mountain are so inviting noone can resist. Hiking is a popular
 
thing to do around Quacken Kill River; Taconic Crest Trail is a great local trail. Grafton Lakes State Park is a glorious spot to go if you're at Quacken Kill River, and there are plenty of people from Petersburg here at Quacken Kill River. There's great hiking along the Southeast Hollow Trail. From a precipitation point of view Quacken Kill River is a rather common place. May is the wettest month with most rain, and the driest month of the year is February. At Quacken Kill River during the summer months highs are in the 80's; the overnight is somewhat chillier of course, usually in the 50's.
