New York whitewater, Salmon River

Clinton county, Military Turnpike below Schuyler Falls to Lake Champlain section whitewater kayaking, rafting, and paddling information.

CLASS IV     6.5 miles

More strainers in this river than I have ever seen, anywhere. Upper part to 87 could be a great run at about 2 1/2 feet(guage on bridge on salmon river rd.) Again, have to be aware of strainers, most are river wide. Dont bother with 87 east to lake champlain, mostly flat with over twenty beaver dams. Lots of leaches. Says Doug Hilderbrandt

This stretch of Salmon River in New York is 6.5 miles long and is according to American Whitewater
a class IV section of whitewater. The beautiful scenery of New York and the sparkling of the sunlight on the water attract people from near and far. The Military Turnpike below Schuyler Falls to Lake Champlain stretch is
one of a few paddling stretches in this river system. The wild scenery of the Adirondack Mountains is great. Some people prefer whitewater rafting and some kayaking, either way there are lots of good spots for that around here. This is a pretty decent length section, it's good length for a morning trip. There are nice comfortable hotels here, but do book a room before you come because it is a very popular destination. Getting a good workout
and just hanging out with mother nature will have you coming back for more. The rivers for whitewater rafting and kayaking here in New York are often tougher than in other states, so you'd better keep in mind that many of the rivers here are not very forgiving. For all you camping people there are campgrounds nearby. The starting point is not too far from Plattsburgh, if you're not familiar with the area there's a road map further down the page.

Briefly about the general area:
Bluff Point is in close proximity and always nice to stop at, and Valcour Shoal is another magnificent place to explore close by.
