  The rivers for whitewater rafting and kayaking here in New York are often tougher than in other states, so if you're not from around here don't forget that a lot of the rivers here are not suitable for beginners. The natural beauty of Ulster County and the sparkling of the sunlight on the water are in themselves reasons enough to come here to paddle. The starting point is not too far from Kingston, if you're not familiar with the area there's
    a road map further down the page. This river system is full of great paddling stretches, the Below Reservoir #1 to Saw Kill Road stretch is just one of them. And of course, there are campgrounds nearby. Getting some good
exercise and a chance to spend some time outdoors have a lot of people coming here. The river winds through the Catskill Mountains and you get great scenery. Whether you're whitewater rafting or kayaking in this general area you'll find lots of paddling rivers. This stretch is mid length, good for a one day paddling trip. The Below Reservoir #1 to Saw Kill Road section of Saw Kill River in New York is 4.5 miles long and has been rated as  
a class II-IV section by American Whitewater. There are many good hotels to choose from, and if you make reservations in advance you're all set.

Briefly about the general area:
People from Kingston love to come to Saw Kill River, and there are good locations to discover along the Willow Trail. So much entertaining stuff in the Catskill Mountains, just inspiring. A spree to Margaret Lewis Norrie State Park rejuvenates the soul. The warmest time of the year brings highs in the 70's to Saw Kill River. All through the moonlight hours it's commonly in the 50's. Daytime highs through the winter are in the 20's with temperatures at Saw Kill River dipping down into the 0's through winter nights.
