New York whitewater, Saw Kill River

Ulster county, Below Reservoir #2 to Reservoir #1 section whitewater kayaking, rafting, and paddling information.

CLASS II-IV     2.5 miles
Whitewater rafting and kayaking in New York is often more difficult than elsewhere, so keep in mind that many runs in this state are not easy. The Below Reservoir #2 to Reservoir #1 section of Saw Kill River in Ulster County is 2.5 miles long and is a class II-IV section of whitewater according to American Whitewater. If you're coming from Kingston it's not a long drive at all to the starting location, as you can see on the road map further
down. The Catskill Mountains scenery is wonderful. Great exercise and just being out on the river for a while have people coming from far and near. There are so many stretches to paddle in this river system, the Below Reservoir
#2 to Reservoir #1 stretch is just one of many. The campgrounds here at Saw Kill River are pretty good. The beautiful scenery of Ulster County and the beautiful way the water current moves down the stream make the trip here worthwhile. This is a somewhat short section so you'd better be prepared to walk your kayak back to put-in a few times. No shortage of good hotels, but do book a room before you come because it is a very popular destination.
No matter if you're whitewater rafting or kayaking this area has a large number of paddling rivers.

Briefly about the general area:
Don't leave Saw Kill River without first going for a hike along the Willow Trail. There are plenty of folks from West Hurley here at Saw Kill River, and there's nice hiking along the Phoenicia Trail. At this river you will never have a bad time. The slopes of Hunter Mountain are so inviting noone can resist, and since you're here, you might as well check out Lewis Hollow. Margaret Lewis Norrie State Park is a delightful site to go if you're at Saw Kill River.
