New York whitewater, Schoharie Creek

Schoharie county, Gilboa to Minekill section whitewater kayaking, rafting, and paddling information.

CLASS II-III     3.5 miles
Whitewater rafting and kayaking in this state is often more difficult than elsewhere, so if you're not from around here don't forget that lots of rivers here are not for beginners. If you're coming from Amsterdam it's not a long drive at all to the put-in location, as you can see on the road map further down. This is a bit of a short stretch so no need to bring snacks. No matter if you're whitewater rafting or kayaking this area has a large
number of paddling places. There aren’t any hotels right nearby but if you're willing to drive a short distance then no problem but if you don’t have reservations you might end up sleeping in your car. If you're a camper
you can camp at one of the great campgrounds nearby. When you're paddling down a Catskill Mountains river like this one you always get great scenery along the way too. This section of Schoharie Creek is 3.5 miles long and is rated by American Whitewater as a class II-III section. There are plenty of other sections in this river system that can be paddled as well. A good workout and a chance to spend some time outdoors are sure to keep you
coming back for more. The natural beauty of New York and the sparkling of the sunlight on the water have people coming here.

Briefly about the general area:
Mine Kill State Park is worth taking a look at if you're at Schoharie Creek; a journey to Mine Kill Falls will fill your spirit with magnificent feelings. Just can't get enough of the Catskill Mountains. A tour to Schoharie Creek wouldn’t be complete without a spree to nearby Max V. Shaul State Park. The great people of North Blenheim like to hang out close by; what would winter be without some skiing at Belleayre. Shew Hollow is a tremendous place to explore.
