New York whitewater, Sixmile Creek Tompkins county, Rt 79 to Brooktondale section whitewater kayaking, rafting, and paddling information.   CLASS V     3 miles   If you're coming from Ithaca it's not a long drive at all to the put-in location, if you're not familiar with the area there's a road map further down the page. This stretch of Sixmile Creek is 3 miles long and is rated by American Whitewater as a class V section. If you've been out of state whitewater rafting and kayaking you might find the rivers here more demanding, so keep in mind that many of the sections here are not safe for beginners.     There are campgrounds quite near the river where you can camp. There are a few other stretches in this river system that can be paddled as well. This stretch is short so better bring some good walking shoes. Some people prefer whitewater rafting and some kayaking, either way around here you'll find a large number of good spots. Lodging is available near the river, and if you make reservations in advance you're all set. Great exercise and just hanging out with mother nature will have you coming back for more. The wonderful New York scenery and the beautiful way the water current moves down the stream attract people from near and far. Briefly about   the general area: When you're here at Sixmile Creek it's always fun to stop by Allan H. Treman State Marine Park, and there are plenty of people from Brooktondale here at Sixmile Creek. Buttermilk Falls State Park is both great and delightful, and it's in close proximity to Sixmile Creek. The yearly rain here at Sixmile Creek is about average. The wettest month of the year is frequently June, that's the one that rains the most, and the driest of the months is January. All through the summer highs here at Sixmile Creek get into the 80's with overnight lows in the 50's. Throughout the winter this place gets highs in the 30's, and nighttime lows all through the winter for Sixmile Creek tend to be in the 10's.
