New York whitewater, Squirmer Creek

Albany Greene county, Niles Road to Oak Hill section whitewater kayaking, rafting, and paddling information.

CLASS III-IV     2.4 miles
The put-in location is a reasonable drive from Kingston. This section of Squirmer Creek is 2.4 miles long and is according to American Whitewater a class III-IV section of whitewater. The beautiful scenery of Albany / Greene County and the playfulness of the water beats anything. The wild scenery of the Catskill Mountains is great. This is a pretty short section so no need to bring snacks. Whether you're whitewater rafting or kayaking around
here you'll find a large number of good rivers. This is the only paddling section along Squirmer Creek. If you're a camper you can camp at one of the great campgrounds nearby. You might have to settle for a hotel a bit away
from the river if you want to stay the night, but do book a room before you come because it is a very popular destination. Getting a good workout and a chance to spend some time outdoors will have you coming back for more. If you've been whitewater rafting and kayaking outside New York you might find the rivers here a bit more challenging, so if you're not from around here don't forget that the rivers in this state are less manageable.

Briefly

about the general area:
Good hiking is available along the Spruceton Trail, and since you're here why not stop by Squirmer Valley. Not enough hours in a day to enjoy the Catskill Mountains. Here at Squirmer Creek there are plenty of people from Oak Hill, and why not head up to Windham Mountain and strap some skis to your feet. This is a great river. Through the warm months at Squirmer Creek temperatures are generally in the 70's. Throughout the dark hours of summer temperatures plunge down into the 50's. For the duration of the winter highs are in the 20's while Squirmer Creek night low temperatures during the wintertime are in the 10's.
