New York whitewater, Ten Mile River

Dutchess county, Wassaic to NY line section whitewater kayaking, rafting, and paddling information.

I've paddled the Ten Mile many times.  Strainers can make it challenging (Class II), high water makes it exceptionally challenging (Class III+).  With enough water, it's a beautiful ride down to the Housatonic and takes about seven hours for the full run. The best place to put in is across the street from the Ten Mile River Metro North RR station, where the Wasaic and Webetuk (spelling?) rivers meet. The wonderful
New York scenery and the beautiful way the water current moves down the stream have people coming here. Whitewater rafting and kayaking spots in New York are harder than the national norm, so don't forget that the rivers
in this state are less manageable. No matter if you're whitewater rafting or kayaking this area has a large number of paddling places. The starting location is a short drive from Torrington, there's a road map further down the page with more info on that. This section is long enough to enjoy a good non stop paddle, suitable for an afternoon trip. This river system has a few good paddling stretches and the Wassaic to NY line section is one
of them. The nearby hotels are a bit away from the river, but if you don’t have reservations you might end up sleeping in your car. Getting your paddling muscles activated and just being out on the river for a while are sure to keep you coming back for more.

Briefly about the general area:
Gotta ski! Thunder Ridge is a glorious location to do that. You undeniably ought to stop at Macedonia Brook State Park since you're here at Ten Mile River; a tour to Mudge Pond Town Beach is always a tremendous idea. This river is so great. There is a tremendous hiking trail near Ten Mile River called the Appalachian National Scenic Trail, and you have to positively stop at beautiful Pine Ledge if you're here.
