  Whitewater rafting and kayaking in New York is often tougher than elsewhere, so don't forget that a large number of rivers in this state are not easy. The Red Oak Mills to New Hamburg section of Wappinger Creek in New York is 8 miles long and has been rated as a class I-III section by American Whitewater. If you're a camper you can camp at one of the great campgrounds nearby. If you're coming from Kingston it's not a long drive at all to the
    put-in location, if you're not familiar with the area there's a road map further down the page. This is a pretty decent length section, suitable for an afternoon trip. You might be into whitewater rafting or kayaking or
both, doesn't matter, this is an area with plenty of places for that. The beautiful scenery of Dutchess County and the sparkling of the sunlight on the water are in themselves reasons enough to come here to paddle. Getting some good exercise and spending some quality time in nature have a lot of people coming here. There are some good stretches to paddle in this river system, the Red Oak Mills to New Hamburg stretch is one of them. No shortage  
of good hotels, but you'd better reserve in advance because these hotels fill up quick.

Briefly about the general area:
While you're here at Wappinger Creek you can take a hike along the Appalachian National Scenic Trail; this is a popular place for people from Wappingers Falls. A spree to Wappinger Creek wouldn’t be complete without a journey to nearby Clarence Fahnestock State Park. Hudson Highlands State Park is worth taking a look at if you're at Wappinger Creek. The high level of rain makes Wappinger Creek a relatively wet spot. May is the wettest month with most rain while February is generally the driest month.
