  This section of Ararat River in Surry County is 21.5 miles long and is rated by American Whitewater as a class I-II section. The natural beauty of Surry County and the sparkling of the sunlight on the water beats anything. If you have the time you can make this a two day trip, so why not pack your camp stove too. Getting your paddling muscles activated and spending some quality time in nature will make you glad you came. Whether you're whitewater
    rafting or kayaking this is an area with plenty of places for that. Whitewater rafting and kayaking in North Carolina is often easier than elsewhere, so if you're not from around here don't forget that lots of rivers in
this state are good for beginners. There arenít any hotels right nearby but if you're willing to drive a short distance then no problem but you'd better reserve in advance because these hotels fill up quick. If you're coming from Mount Airy it's not a long drive at all to the starting location, please print out a copy of the road map further down the page so you wonít get lost. The campgrounds here at Ararat River are pretty good.

Going for a hike on the Run Trail is always a good adventure; places like Pilot Mountain State Park are nice to stop by. Here at Ararat River you'll almost certainly meet some folks from Ararat. Ararat River sees pretty high levels of rainfall. Of all the months in a year May is the one with the most rain, and January on the other hand is the driest. Summer at Ararat River arrives with high temperatures in the 80's. When the night sets in temperatures dip down into the 50's. The cold days of the wintertime come with highs in the 40's while Ararat River night low temperatures all through the winter are in the 20's.
