North Carolina whitewater, Cold Springs Creek

Haywood county, to Harmen Den section whitewater kayaking, rafting, and paddling information.

CLASS IV     2.5 miles
The to Harmen Den stretch of Cold Springs Creek in Haywood County is 2.5 miles long and it is classified as a class IV section by American Whitewater. The wonderful North Carolina scenery and the cool fresh water make the trip here worthwhile. The rivers for whitewater rafting and kayaking in this state are often easier than in other states, so you'd better keep in mind that a large number of rivers in this state are quite easy. Great
exercise and a chance to spend some time outdoors have people coming from far and near. The Great Smoky Mountains scenery is wonderful. This stretch is short so better bring some good walking shoes. There are campgrounds
quite near the river where you can camp. If you're coming from Newport it's not a long drive at all to the put-in location, as you can see on the road map further down. Not too many hotels nearby, you'll have to drive a bit to get to one, and if you make reservations in advance you're all set. Some people prefer whitewater rafting and some kayaking, either way this area has a large number of paddling rivers. This is one of a small number
of paddling sections in this river system, there are a few others too.

Briefly about the general area:
There's no such thing as a bad day of skiing at nearby Cataloochee, and going for a hike along the Asbury Trail will let you absorb the natural beauty of this vicinity. That right there is a heap of cool stuff already but it goes on, the Great Smoky Mountains has it all. While you're here at Cold Springs Creek you will meet lots of people from close by Del Rio, and a nice site is Hurricane Gap. This river is so good. If the weather is perfect here at Cold Springs Creek, you can go for a hike along the Walnut Mountain Trail.
