This stretch of Fisher River is 20 miles long and is a class I-II section of whitewater according to American Whitewater. If you're coming from Mount Airy it's not a long drive at all to the starting location, if you're not familiar with the area there's a road map further down the page. Ridge Mountains is great. There's camping available near Fisher River. There are nice comfortable hotels here, but you'd better reserve in advance because these hotels fill up quick. The wonderful Surry County scenery and
| the water flowing gracefully down Fisher River make the trip here worthwhile. There are a few other sections in this river system that can be paddled as well. The sections for whitewater rafting and kayaking here in North Carolina are often more forgiving than in other states, so if you're visiting here do keep in mind that many of the sections in this state are safe for beginners. Briefly about the general area:
There are plenty of folks from Dobson here at Fisher River. Through the summertime here at Fisher River, high temperatures ordinarily get into the 80's, and through the night it cools down to the 50's. The winter comes with
highs in the 40's; overnight lows at Fisher River during the wintertime frequently dip into the 20's. Fisher River gets much water. During the month of May you get the most rain around here, and the driest of the months is January.
