  The wonderful North Carolina scenery and the beautiful way the water current moves down the stream are in themselves reasons enough to come here to paddle. The Route 1328 to Route 1438 stretch of Johns River is 6.5 miles long and has been determined by American Whitewater to be a class I-II section. The starting point is not too far from Hickory-Morganton-Lenoir, please print out a copy of the road map further down the page so you won’t
    get lost. Not too many hotels nearby, you'll have to drive a bit to get to one, and if you make reservations in advance you're all set. Whitewater paddling here in the Blue Ridge Mountains is a great experience. Whether
you're whitewater rafting or kayaking this area has a large number of paddling rivers. If you're a camper you can camp at one of the great campgrounds nearby. There are some good stretches to paddle in this river system, the Route 1328 to Route 1438 stretch is one of them. The rivers for whitewater rafting and kayaking in this state are often easier than in other states, so don't forget that many runs in this state are very easy. This is  
a pretty decent length section, it's good length for a morning trip. Getting a good workout and just being out on the river for a while have people coming from far and near.

Briefly about the general area:
If you're visiting Johns River from Morganton, you won't be the only one, and the Yancey Ridge Trail is a perfect hiking trail nearby. All the outdoors entertaining things in the Blue Ridge Mountains will keep you coming back repeatedly. All through the days of summer at Johns River temperatures are typically in the 70's. Once the sun is down it dips down to the 50's. Daytime highs during the wintertime are in the 40's, and throughout the dark hours in the wintertime at Johns River temperatures drop to the 10's.
