North Carolina whitewater, Pigeon River

Haywood county, Confluence of East-West Fork to New Hepco Bidge section whitewater kayaking, rafting, and paddling information.

CLASS I-III     26.7 miles
If you're coming from Asheville it's not a long drive at all to the put-in location, there's a road map further down the page with more info on that. The scenic beauty of North Carolina and the sparkling of the sunlight on the water beats anything. This stretch of Pigeon River in North Carolina is 26.7 miles long and has been determined by American Whitewater to be a class I-III section. A bit of exercise and spending some quality time
in nature will have you coming back for more. If you're a camper you can camp at one of the great campgrounds nearby. The wild scenery of the Great Smoky Mountains is great. The Confluence of East-West Fork to New Hepco
Bidge stretch is one of many paddling stretches in this river system. You might be into whitewater rafting or kayaking or both, doesn't matter, this is an area with plenty of places for that. There are nice comfortable hotels here, and if you make reservations in advance you're all set. This stretch is long enough for an overnight trip if you take your time, so pack your camping stuff. The average North Carolina whitewater rafting or kayaking
river tends to be a bit easier to master than those in other states, so don't forget that many of the sections in this state are safe for beginners.

Briefly about the general area:
The Caldwell Fork Trail is a good hiking trail right next door to Pigeon River; the good people of Clyde like to hang out nearby. Life's too short to enjoy all the cool stuff in the Great Smoky Mountains. Cataloochee is a fine local ski area, and Terrell Cove is a delightful site to pop by. This is a really good river. If the weather is good here at Pigeon River, you can go for a hike along the Asbury Trail.
