North Carolina whitewater, Pigeon River Haywood county, Harmon Den to Big Creek section whitewater kayaking, rafting, and paddling information.   CLASS IV-V     7.2 miles   This stretch of Pigeon River is 7.2 miles long and is according to American Whitewater a class IV-V section of whitewater. Whitewater rafting and kayaking spots in this state tend to be more forgiving than the national average, so you'd better keep in mind that a large number of rivers in this state are quite easy. For all you camping people there are campgrounds nearby. The wonderful Haywood County scenery and the beautiful way the water     current moves down the stream attract people from near and far. This is a pretty decent length section, good for a one day paddling trip. Since you're on this site you are probably into whitewater rafting or kayaking, either way in this general area you'll find lots of paddling places. You might have to settle for a hotel a bit away from the river if you want to stay the night, but do book a room before you come because it is a very popular destination. This is not the only paddling stretch in this river system, there are others too. The Great Smoky Mountains scenery is wonderful. The starting location is a short drive from Newport, please print out a copy   of the road map further down the page so you won’t get lost. A good workout and just being out on the river for a while are sure to keep you coming back for more. Briefly about the general area: Here at Pigeon River you'll in all probability meet some people from Hartford, and nearby you find the Big Branch Trail which is a perfect hiking trail. So many cool things in the Great Smoky Mountains, just impressive. A perfect site to stop by in close proximity to Pigeon River is Messer Gap, and going for a hike on the Asbury Trail is always a good adventure. This river is a wonderful place to visit.
