CLASS II-III     6.6 miles
  The starting point is not too far from Boone, if you're not familiar with the area there's a road map further down the page. This section of Steels Creek is 6.6 miles long and has been rated as a class II-III section by American Whitewater. The scenic beauty of Burke County and the sparkling of the sunlight on the water will make you feel great. The nearby hotels are a bit away from the river, but you'd better reserve in advance because
    these hotels fill up quick. There's camping available near Steels Creek. The wild scenery of the Blue Ridge Mountains is great. The sections for whitewater rafting and kayaking here in North Carolina are often more forgiving
than in other states, so better not forget that rivers in this state are less demanding. There are some good sections to paddle in this river system, the to Confluence with Upper Creek section is one of them. Some people prefer whitewater rafting and some kayaking, either way this area has a large number of paddling rivers. This stretch is mid length, suitable for an afternoon trip. A good workout and just hanging out with mother nature  
will make you glad you came.

Briefly about the general area:
There's no such thing as a bad day of skiing at nearby Sugar Mountain. Have a pleasant hiking adventure along the Daniel Boone Scout Trail. Lake James State Park is a tremendous place to stretch your legs a bit, and if you're popping by from Collettsville, you won't be the only one. This is such a wonderful river. Take a hike on the Yancey Ridge Trail. Steels Creek gets a great deal of water. The month with most of the rain is May, and the driest of the months is December. Throughout the warm months at Steels Creek temperatures are regularly in the 70's.
