The Carolina Hemlocks Camp to Route 1131 stretch of Toe River - South in Avery/ Mitchell/ Yancey County is 22.5 miles long and has been determined by American Whitewater to be a class I-II section. The put-in location is a short drive     from Johnson City, as you can see on the road map further down. This section has enough mileage for an overnight trip, so why not pack your camp stove too. You might have to settle for a hotel a bit away from the river if you want to stay the night, but you'd better reserve in advance because these hotels fill up quick. There are some good sections to paddle in this river system, the Carolina Hemlocks Camp to Route 1131 section is one of them. You can pitch a tent or park your RV at a nearby campground. The natural beauty of North Carolina and the sparkling of the sunlight on the water will make you feel great. The Blue Ridge Mountains scenery is wonderful.   Whether you're whitewater rafting or kayaking in this general area you'll find lots of paddling spots. Great exercise and just hanging out with mother nature will make you glad you came. Briefly about the general area: Go for a hike on the Bald Mountain Trail; if you're here you will meet lots of people from nearby Micaville. You truly have to like the Blue Ridge Mountains. A trip to Toe River - South wouldn’t be complete without a journey to close by Mount Mitchell State Park. Toe River - South gets a great deal of water.
