Ohio whitewater, Paint Creek

CLASS I-II(III) 7 miles

The 1/4 mile section just past concluence with Rocky Fork creek is excellent for Ohio. A definite Class 3 depending on water flows, lower folws are more challening to a point. Watch out for the large souse hole about midway through, go right at Turtle Rock, (large flat rock formation 2/3rds through and go far left at the end due to 2 to 3 foot ledge most of the way across. There is a not so easy put in at RT 50 On Rocky Fork just before |
confluence with Paint Creek and a take out about 2.25 miles down stream on Paint Creek at the old RT. 50 Roadside Rest allowing multiple runs thru the Chutes. Better Scout it first. Be carful if you go past the Roadside
| Rest there is a 20 foot fall with no easy way to run it. Another decent section, (probably class II), is the section between Greenfield and Paint Creek Lake. This is a section where you will find almost continuos light rapids carrying you through pretty quickly, until you hit flat water from the Lake backing up the creek about 2 miles from the lake. Put in at the park at the east end of 2nd Street in Greenfield with parking not a problem. Plenty | |
|
of take outs at Paint Creek Lake but a lot of flat water. I am checking to see if it is possible to take out on Paint Creek Rd where Greenfield bicycle path joins. Says Gerrie Greene
The starting location is a short
drive from Chillicothe, as you can see on the road map further down. The nature scenery of Ohio and the beautiful way the water current moves down the stream will make you feel great. The average whitewater rafting or kayaking
river tends to be a bit easier to master in this state than those in other states, so don't forget that many of the sections in this state are safe for beginners.
