Oregon whitewater, Deschutes River Jefferson county, Lower Bridge to Billy Chinook Reservoir section whitewater kayaking, rafting, and paddling information.   CLASS IV+     15 miles   This section of Deschutes River in Jefferson County is 15 miles long and it is classified as a class IV+ section by American Whitewater. The beautiful scenery of Oregon and the cool fresh water are in themselves reasons enough to come here to paddle. A bit of exercise and a chance to spend some time outdoors will make you glad you came. The starting location is a reasonable drive from Bend, if you're not familiar with the area there's a     road map further down the page. If you have the time you can make this a two day trip, so go ahead and pack your camp stove. There aren’t any hotels right nearby but if you're willing to drive a short distance then no problem but do book a room before you come because it is a very popular destination. There are plenty of other stretches in this river system that can be paddled as well. If you've been whitewater rafting and kayaking outside this state you might find the rivers here a bit more challenging, so keep in mind that a lot of the rivers here are not suitable for beginners. Since you're on this site you are probably into whitewater rafting or kayaking, either   way this area has a large number of paddling places. Briefly about the general area: Going to The Cove Palisades State Park near Deschutes River is a fine thing to do, and going for a hike along the Reservation Trail will let you absorb the natural beauty of this vicinity. Peter Skene Ogden State Park is a good place to explore on a gorgeous day; you'll probably meet some folks from Culver here. This river is a wonderful place to visit. A spree to Deschutes River wouldn't be complete without taking a look at Steelhead Falls. During the summertime months at Deschutes River highs are usually in the 90's.
