The put-in is not too far from Brookings, as you can see on the road map further down. This stretch of Elk River in Curry County is 6.5 miles long and is a class III-IV section of whitewater according to American Whitewater. You can pitch a tent or park your RV at a nearby campground. When you're paddling down a Coast     Ranges river like this one you always get great scenery along the way too. This section is long enough to enjoy a good non stop paddle, it's perfect for a one day trip. Some people prefer whitewater rafting and some kayaking, either way there are not so many other good places for that around here. If you've been out of state whitewater rafting and kayaking you might find the rivers here more demanding, so don't forget that a large number of rivers in this state are not easy. There aren’t any hotels right nearby but if you're willing to drive a short distance then no problem but if you don’t have reservations you might end up sleeping in your car. A bit of exercise   and spending some quality time in nature are great reasons to come. This river system has a few good paddling sections and the Slate Creek to Elk River Hatchery section is one of them. Briefly about the general area: While you're here at Elk River you will meet lots of people from nearby Sixes, and there is a fine hiking trail nearby called the Grassy Knob Trail. All year is a fine time in the Coast Ranges if you go for the outdoors. A day at Arizona Beach in the neighborhood of Elk River is time well spent, and don't leave without popping by Humbug Mountain State Park.
