The put-in location is a short drive from Prineville, as you can see on the road map further down. This section of John Day River is 47 miles long and is rated by American Whitewater as a class II section. There are some good stretches to paddle in this river system, the Service Creek to Clarno stretch is one of them. Whitewater rafting and kayaking in Oregon is often tougher than elsewhere, so keep in mind that many of the rivers here are |
not very forgiving. Now this is a pretty long section, perfect for a real wilderness adventure. For all you camping people there are campgrounds nearby. The nearby hotels are a bit away from the river, and if you make reservations

are in the 40's. The wintertime comes with highs in the 40's while John Day River nighttime low temperatures all through the winter are in the 20's. John Day River is commonly a reasonably waterless place. The month with most of the rain is November; July is the month with the least moisture.
