CLASS II     47 miles
  The put-in location is a short drive from Prineville, as you can see on the road map further down. This section of John Day River is 47 miles long and is rated by American Whitewater as a class II section. There are some good stretches to paddle in this river system, the Service Creek to Clarno stretch is one of them. Whitewater rafting and kayaking in Oregon is often tougher than elsewhere, so keep in mind that many of the rivers here are
    not very forgiving. Now this is a pretty long section, perfect for a real wilderness adventure. For all you camping people there are campgrounds nearby. The nearby hotels are a bit away from the river, and if you make reservations
in advance you're all set. Since you're on this site you are probably into whitewater rafting or kayaking, either way in this general area you won't find many other paddling rivers. The nature scenery of Wheeler/ Jefferson/ Wasco County and the water flowing gracefully down John Day River have people coming here.

sure to stumble upon some good people from Fossil here. Mathieson Spring is always fun to check out. For the period of the summertime, highs generally are in the 80's at John Day River, and during summer nights temperatures are in the 40's. The wintertime comes with highs in the 40's while John Day River nighttime low temperatures all through the winter are in the 20's. John Day River is commonly a reasonably waterless place. The month with most of the rain is November; July is the month with the least moisture.
