  The put-in is not too far from City of The Dalles, there's a road map further down the page with more info on that. The Clarno to Cottonwood stretch of John Day River in Wasco / Wheeler / Sherman / Gilliam County is 69 miles long and has been rated as a class II-III section by American Whitewater. The wonderful Oregon scenery and the cool fresh water are reasons enough to come here and paddle. Getting a good workout and just hanging out
    with mother nature are sure to keep you coming back for more. The campgrounds here at John Day River are pretty good. A section like this is is of course not run in a single day, so better bring your camping gear along.
The average Oregon whitewater rafting or kayaking river tends to be harder to run than those in other states, so don't forget that many of the sections here are not safe for beginners. There aren’t any hotels right nearby but if you're willing to drive a short distance then no problem but do book a room before you come because it is a very popular destination. Some people prefer whitewater rafting and some kayaking, either way around here  
you won't find a large number of other rivers. The Clarno to Cottonwood section is one of a few paddling sections in this river system.

Briefly about the general area:
John Day River is near Crazy Hollow which is absolutely worth checking out. Schilling Spring is a stunning place to stop by while you're at John Day River. It is very dried out here at John Day River usually. December is the month that gets the most snow while July is mostly the driest month. During the months of summer here at John Day River, high temperatures ordinarily get into the 80's. Summer nighttime lows dip down to the 50's.
