Oregon whitewater, Marys River Benton county, Wren to Philomath section whitewater kayaking, rafting, and paddling information.   CLASS I-II     10.5 miles   A friend and I have done the Wren to Philomath stretch a few times in the past few weeks. It's mid-January, but it's been dry for a few weeks, so the water level at the Philomath gauge is around 5. 5 feet. Neither of us have much whitewater experience and we're both paddling open canoes, but we haven't had too much difficulty navigating the rapids. The more dangerous part, to my mind, begins once you get down into Philomath, because     the brush on the banks gets a lot denser and there are lots of strainers and logjams. There is one rapid that we elected to not run, which is about a quarter of a mile downriver from the Highway 20 crossing at the Marys River Lumbermill (just West of Philomath). The kind folks who owned the adjacent property let us portage through their backyard (river left), but the portage to the right looked maybe just as good. I've also paddled from 53rd street in far Southwest Corvallis down to the Willamette, and had a lot of fun with it, but there are a couple of major logjams you should be prepared for. Whitewater rafting and kayaking spots in Oregon tend to be more challenging than the national average, so if you're visiting here do keep in mind that the rivers in this state are less manageable. The Wren to Philomath stretch of Marys River is 10.5 miles long and is a class I-II section of whitewater according to American Whitewater. You can pitch a tent or park your RV at a nearby campground.
