Oregon whitewater, Sandy River

Clackamas county, McNeil Campground to Lolo Pass Road section whitewater kayaking, rafting, and paddling information.

CLASS IV     4.5 miles
The natural beauty of Clackamas County and the beautiful way the water current moves down the stream are reasons enough to come here and paddle. The put-in location is a short drive from Hood River, please print out a copy of the road map further down the page so you won’t get lost. Whitewater rafting and kayaking spots in Oregon are harder than the national norm, so keep in mind that a large number of rivers in this state are not easy.
The Central Cascade Range scenery is wonderful. This is a pretty decent length section, suitable for an afternoon trip. Great exercise and a chance to spend some time outdoors are sure to keep you coming back for more. For
all you camping people there are campgrounds nearby. This stretch of Sandy River is 4.5 miles long and is a class IV section of whitewater according to American Whitewater. There are plenty of other sections in this river system that can be paddled as well. Since you're on this site you are probably into whitewater rafting or kayaking, either way this area has a large number of paddling rivers. No need to look hard for hotels, but you'd better
reserve in advance because these hotels fill up quick.

Briefly about the general area:
The Flag Mountain Trail offers hiking at its best; you certainly should visit Mount Hood National Forest while you're here. Yep, outdoors exciting stuff truly is plentiful here in the Central Cascade Range. There's great hiking along the West Zigzag Mountain Trail, and you'll probably meet some people from Rhododendron here. This is a great river. Really splendid skiing awaits you at Mt. Hood Ski Bowl, and Sandy River is in the neighborhood of John B. Yeon State Park which is a scenic site.
