  The scenic beauty of Douglas County and the sparkling of the sunlight on the water beats anything. If you're coming from Roseburg it's not a long drive at all to the starting location, please print out a copy of the road map further down the page so you wonít get lost. Great exercise and a chance to spend some time outdoors are great reasons to come. You might be into whitewater rafting or kayaking or both, doesn't matter, in this general
    area you won't find many other paddling places. If you're a camper you can camp at one of the great campgrounds nearby. This is a short paddling stretch so better bring some good walking shoes. There arenít any hotels right
nearby but if you're willing to drive a short distance then no problem but do book a room before you come because it is a very popular destination. The river winds through the Coast Ranges and you get great scenery. The Sawyers Rapids stretch of Umpqua River in Douglas County is 2.3 miles long and is a class II-III section of whitewater according to American Whitewater. The average Oregon whitewater rafting or kayaking river tends to be  
harder to run than those in other states, so keep in mind that rivers here are less forgiving. The Sawyers Rapids section is one of a few paddling sections in this river system.

Briefly about the general area:
A short tour to Sawyer Rapids is always worthwhile, and Bunch Bar is in the vicinity, and is a tremendous place. But wait, there's more fun stuff to do in the Coast Ranges. Here at Umpqua River there are plenty of people from Elkton. For the period of the summer highs here at Umpqua River reach the 70's, and throughout the night it cools down to the 50's. The wintertime brings highs down to the 50's; overnight lows at Umpqua River during the wintertime commonly sink into the 30's.
