If you're coming from Astoria it's not a long drive at all to the starting location, as you can see on the road     map further down. This is an extremely short stretch so better bring some good walking shoes. This is not the only paddling section in this river system, there are others too. You might have to settle for a hotel a bit away from the river if you want to stay the night, but you'd better reserve in advance because these hotels fill up quick. A good workout and spending some quality time in nature will make you glad you came. If you've been whitewater rafting and kayaking outside this state you might find the rivers here a bit more challenging, so if you're not from around here don't forget that many of the rivers here are not very forgiving.
