If you're coming from Hood River it's not a long drive at all to the put-in location, as you can see on the road map further down. This stretch of Zigzag River is 3.2 miles long and is according to American Whitewater a class III-IV section of whitewater. This section is quite short so it's not like you're gonna spend     hours on the river in one stretch. Lodging is available near the river, but you'd better reserve in advance because these hotels fill up quick. Whitewater rafting and kayaking in Oregon is often tougher than elsewhere, so better not forget that rivers here are less forgiving. Some people prefer whitewater rafting and some kayaking, either way there are lots of good places for that around here. The Central Cascade Range scenery is wonderful. Getting a good workout and a chance to spend some time outdoors have a lot of people coming here. If you're a camper you can camp at one of the great campgrounds nearby. There are some good sections to paddle in this river   system, the Tollgate to Sandy River section is one of them. Briefly about the general area: Here at Zigzag River you'll perhaps meet some people from Rhododendron, and as expected, everybody loves John B. Yeon State Park. These mountains rock, just look at all the amusing stuff to do in the Central Cascade Range. You need to take a look at Crutcher Bench while you're here at Zigzag River, and hiking is a popular thing to do around Zigzag River; West Zigzag Mountain Trail is a good local trail. This river has so much to offer. Mount Hood National Forest is a wonderful spot; the best way to spend a winter day is on the slopes of nearby Mt.
